Drake well Museum and Park

Although the enhanced image of Edwin Drake's historic engine house and derrick spoofs current alternative energy choices, the site is the birthplace of the modern petroleum industry in 1859. The outdoor exhibits feature a board-for-board replica of Drake's engine house and working reproductions of the machinery he used to drill and pump oil. The original well site demonstrates how a steam engine lifts oil from the well. Other working machinery includes a central power lease with 20 HP gas engine, rod lines, eccentric gears and pump jacks at demonstration wells. Lots of changing technology in the petroleum industry!
The renovated museum is expected to open with a new permanent exhibit about oil and gas in our everyday lives in 2011. Meanwhile the beautifully maintained park is a pleasure to visit. Come see!

Well worth the visit and soon to be even better! New exhibit will help visitors understand how we came to be dependent on oil and natural gas and how we can make wise choices about alternative energy sources while preserving the essential products made from oil (plastic, synthetic fibers, wax, etc.) that have changed our lives forever.
